John Joseph Montgomery was an inventor from California. He wanted to find a way for humans to fly.

He spent a long time studying large birds. He watched eagles, hawks, and vultures. He looked at their wing shape and weight.

At first, he tried to build machines with flapping wings. He called these ornithopters. But he found that humans are not strong enough to flap them. Instead, he decided to build gliders. These are flying machines with fixed wings.

In 1884, he flew a glider for 600 feet. He used an elevator to control the pitch. Pitch is how the nose of the craft moves up or down. He also used weight shifting to help with roll. Roll is how the craft tilts side to side.

Later, he added flaps to the wings. These flaps helped the pilot stay steady in the wind. He also studied how air moves around curved surfaces. This helped him understand how to get lift. Lift is the power that pushes a wing up into the air.
