They built the Wright Flyer. It was the first plane to fly with a person inside. This happened on December 17, 1903. They tested the plane in North Carolina.

The plane was made of wood and cloth. They used spruce and ash wood for the parts. The wings were covered in cotton muslin.

To make it move, they used a gasoline engine. An employee named Charlie Taylor built the engine. It powered two propellers. These propellers spun in opposite directions. This helped the plane stay steady.

Flying the plane was not easy. The pilot had to lie on his stomach. He used a hip cradle to steer. Moving his hips pulled wires to twist the wings. This is called wing warping.

The brothers flew four times that day. The first flight lasted only 12 seconds. The fourth flight was the longest. It lasted 59 seconds. Then, a strong gust of wind hit the plane. It crashed and broke. The plane never flew again. Today, you can see it in a museum in Washington, D.C.
