On December 17, 1903, the wind provided the necessary airspeed for takeoff. Orville Wright performed the first successful flight of the day. It lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. 
The Wright brothers' work had a profound impact on the future of flight. While their specific canard design and wing-warping method were not used in later large-scale planes, their theories were essential. Their use of roll control led to the development of ailerons, which are hinged surfaces used to turn modern aircraft. They also perfected the concept of simultaneous, coordinated roll and yaw control. This discovery is used on virtually every fixed-wing aircraft flying today. Their use of wind tunnel data ensured their wings and propellers were highly efficient.
Despite their success, the brothers faced significant challenges regarding their legacy. They entered a long dispute with the Smithsonian Institution over whether the Flyer was truly the first successful airplane. The Flyer eventually joined the Smithsonian collection in 1948.
