Their research involved many different stages and machines. Between 1900 and 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests. These tests helped them develop their skills as pilots. 

While the Wrights are famous, their status has faced some debate. Other early aviators made competing claims about who invented the airplane first. Historian Edward Roach notes that the brothers were excellent self-taught engineers. However, he suggests they lacked the business skills to dominate the growing aviation industry.
