He was a man who loved to explore the sky. He became very famous during World War I. People remember him as the first fighter ace in history. An ace is a pilot who wins many battles in the air. He was born on June 13, 1889, in Montferrat. His life changed when he started flying planes.

Flying was a new and exciting thing back then. Pégoud first served in the French Army. He left the army in February 1913 to fly. He earned his pilot certificate on March 1, 1913. He was even the first pilot to jump from a plane with a parachute. During that jump, he saw the plane move in a loop. He wanted to learn how to control that movement.

Pégoud worked hard to master new flight moves. He worked as a test pilot for Louis Blériot. He used a Blériot model XI monoplane for his tests. On September 1, 1913, he flew upside down for the first time. Then, on September 21, 1913, he flew a loop. A Russian pilot named Pyotr Nesterov had flown a loop first. Nesterov did this on September 9 near Kiev.

After his famous flights, Pégoud became a teacher. The Czar of Russia even invited him to Moscow. He showed many people how to fly well. When the war started, he flew for the French Army. On February 5, 1915, he helped shoot down two German planes. He soon began flying single-seat planes. He claimed more victories in April and July of 1915. He was the first person to reach ace status.

Sadly, Pégoud's flying career ended very quickly. On August 31, 1915, he was shot down. He was only 26 years old when he died. A German pilot named Otto Kandulski shot him down. Kandulski had actually been a student of Pégoud once. Pégoud received the Croix de Guerre medal for his bravery. He was later moved to Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris in 1920.
