This made his aircraft very easy to see in the sky. He was a hero in his home country.

Richthofen did not start his career in the air. He first joined a cavalry unit of soldiers on horses. He served as a reconnaissance officer on many fronts. This job involved watching the enemy from a distance. However, he grew bored with his duties in the army. He did not want to collect supplies like cheese or eggs. He wanted to be in the fight.

He met a pilot named Oswald Boelcke. Boelcke helped him learn how to fly solo. At first, Richthofen was not a great pilot. He even crashed during his very first flight. But he worked hard to improve his skills. He became a master of tactics. He used the sun to hide his movements. He would dive from above to attack his enemies.

They often set up camp in tents on airfields. Richthofen was a very successful leader. He was credited with 80 air combat victories. He even received the Pour le Mérite award. This was the highest honor in Germany.
