Air medical services use aircraft to help people during emergencies.

These services include helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, which are planes with wings that do not move. Helicopters are great for short trips or reaching hard places. Fixed-wing planes are often used for long distances. Some aircraft carry medical crews to help patients during the flight. This type of care is called aeromedical.

These planes are equipped with tools like medicine, ventilators, and stretchers.

Flying can be much faster than using a land ambulance. This is very helpful in rural areas where people live far apart. Some experts believe in a theory called the golden hour. This theory says that people with major injuries need to reach a trauma center very quickly.

A helicopter can bring doctors to the scene of an injury. Then, it can fly the patient to a specialist hospital. This can happen much faster than driving on a road.

Using aircraft for medicine has a long history. During World War I, planes were used to move soldiers from battlefields. One recorded mission in 1917 in Turkey used a British ambulance. It flew a soldier to a hospital in just 45 minutes.

Before this flight, the same trip by land would have taken three days. Later, during the Korean War, the Bell H-13 became a dedicated MEDEVAC aircraft. MEDEVAC is a term used by the military for medical evacuation.

Many different places have built their own air medical services. In 1928, John Flynn started the Flying Doctor Service in Australia. This service helps people living in very remote areas.

In 1934, Marie Marvingt started Africa's first civil air ambulance in Morocco. Other services began in Sweden and Thailand in the early 1920s. Even Scotland set up a service for its remote islands in 1936.

There are some hard jobs and risks when flying medical patients. Air ambulances can be very expensive to use. Pilots must also watch the weather very closely. Flying in bad weather or at night can be dangerous.

Safety is the most important thing for the crew. They must decide if a flight is safe before they take off. They also check things like air traffic and distance to the hospital. Crew comfort is also a reason to cancel a flight.
