The study also found that patients did not arrive at the hospital any faster. Looking at health outcomes in Cornwall and London, researchers found no evidence that HEMS, or Helicopter Emergency Medical Service, improved survival for trauma patients. Because of this, ground responders must use strict protocols. They must decide if a patient's condition truly requires an expensive flight.

Safety is the single most important factor in deciding to fly. Pilots and medical crews must consider weather, air traffic, and distance. Flying at night or in bad weather increases the risk of fatal crashes. Crew comfort and the potential for postcrash fires are also serious concerns.
