How these planes work depends on their design. Floatplanes are often modified from land-based planes. They have floats mounted under the fuselage instead of wheels. This keeps the main body away from the water, which makes building them simpler. However, floats add extra weight and drag. This can make the plane slower and harder to climb.

People have been trying to fly over water for a long time. In 1876, Alphonse Pénaud filed a patent for a flying machine with a boat hull. Later, in 1898, Wilhelm Kress tried to build a floatplane called the Drachenflieger. It used two 30 hp Daimler engines, but it eventually sank. On 28 March 1910, Henri Fabre flew the first successful powered seaplane. It was a trimaran floatplane called the Gnome Omega-powered hydravion. This success inspired many other pilots to experiment with water landings. By 1912, the first scheduled seaplane passenger services began in France.

History shows how these planes changed over time. American aviator Glenn Curtiss helped develop the first flying boats around 1913.

During the World Wars, seaplanes were very important. They were used for maritime patrol and search and rescue missions.

Some specialized aircraft are also classified as amphibious aircraft, or amphibians. These versatile machines can operate from both water and conventional land-based airfields.

Floatplanes and flying boats function through different mechanical principles. A floatplane uses slender floats mounted under the fuselage to provide buoyancy.

In this design, the fuselage remains above the water surface. This separation simplifies production because the main body does not need to be watertight. However, these floats add significant empty weight and increase the drag coefficient. This results in a slower rate of climb and a reduced payload capacity. Floatplanes are also limited by wave heights, which typically should not exceed 12 inches (0.31 m).

Flying boats utilize a different structural approach for water operations. In a flying boat, the fuselage itself is purpose-designed to act as a hull.

This hull provides the necessary buoyancy for the aircraft to float. To maintain lateral stability, flying boats may use under-wing floats or sponsons. Sponsons are wing-like projections attached to the side of the hull. Because the entire body provides lift and flotation, flying boats can be much larger than floatplanes. This allows them to carry significantly more weight and passengers.

There are several ways to configure the floats on a floatplane. Some designs use a single large float mounted directly under the fuselage. These often include smaller stabilizing floats under the wingtips to prevent tipping. Single-float designs are often better for landing in rougher water. This is because the central float is attached to the strongest part of the aircraft structure. Other designs use twin floats mounted side by side outboard of the fuselage. While twin floats can restrict handling in waves, they make it easier to moor the plane or board passengers. They also leave the belly free for carrying items like torpedoes.

In the 21st century, seaplanes continue to serve important niche roles. They are used for aerial firefighting to drop water on forest fires. They also provide transport around archipelagos and access to roadless, remote areas. Modern production models show a wide range of scales. Small light-sport amphibians like the Icon A5 exist alongside massive multi-role machines. For example, the ShinMaywa US-2 is a large amphibian weighing 100,000 lb.
