Family medicine is a special type of medical care. It focuses on the health of every person in a family. These doctors care for people of all ages and all sexes. They look at every part of the human body. They also look at how a person fits into their community. This way of working is called holistic care. It means they treat the whole person, not just one sickness.

Family physicians do many important jobs every day. They provide preventive care to help people stay well. This includes routine checkups and health screenings. They also give immunizations to stop diseases from spreading. Some doctors even help deliver babies and provide prenatal care. They are very good at treating common problems. In the United States, they treat more back pain than any other kind of specialist. They also manage long-term illnesses by working with other doctors.

This field has changed a lot over time. In the past, any doctor could work as a family doctor. This changed after World War II. Many new medical specialties were becoming popular. Doctors wanted more training to keep up with new science. In February 1969, family medicine became its own official specialty in the United States. This was the twentieth specialty to be recognized. Before this, people often called them general practitioners.

Becoming a family physician requires many years of hard work. First, students must earn a medical degree. In the United States, this is an M.D. or a D.O. degree. After that, they must complete a residency. A residency is extra training that lasts three or four years. In Canada, this training usually lasts two years. Doctors must also pass big exams to become board certified. They must keep learning through new classes to stay certified.

Family medicine is a huge part of how our world stays healthy. In the United States, nearly one in four office visits is to a family doctor. That is about 208 million visits every single year. This is much more than any other medical specialty. These doctors often help people in rural areas or places with few resources. There is a high demand for these doctors right now. Many groups are working together to help more students choose this path. They want to make sure every community has the care it needs.
