There are different levels of prevention that work in a specific order. Primal prevention starts even before a baby is born. It focuses on the environment of a mother and her growing child. Primary prevention is the next step to stop diseases from occurring. You can do this by eating nutritious meals or getting vaccines.

Secondary prevention means finding a disease early through screening tests. This helps doctors find problems before you even feel sick. Tertiary prevention focuses on treating a sickness to reduce its harm.

People have worked on these ideas for a long time. In the early 1900s, Sara Josephine Baker spoke about preventive medicine. Later, in the 1940s, Hugh R. Leavell and E. Gurney Clark helped define it. They worked at big schools of public health at Harvard and Columbia. They created the terms primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. These names are still used by doctors today.

Scientists use many tools to keep us safe. Doctors use screenings to check for high blood pressure or high blood sugar. They can even use genetic testing to look for certain diseases. Some people live in food deserts where fresh food is hard to find. These are areas without supermarkets that are close by. In these places, people might rely on mobile fresh markets. These are special buses that bring fruits and vegetables to neighborhoods.

Preventive healthcare connects to many things you see every day. When you wear a bicycle helmet, you are using primary prevention. Turning down the heat on a water heater is also a way to stay safe. Using the air quality index helps you know when to play outside. Even washing your hands is a way to stop germs from spreading. These small choices help keep the whole world much healthier.
