In the past, many famous leaders had their own foot doctors. Napoleon and French kings used personal podiatrists. Even President Abraham Lincoln had one named Isachar Zachrie. During the U.S. Civil War, Lincoln sent his podiatrist on special missions. The first podiatric society started in New York in 1895. The first podiatric school opened in 1911.

Training to be a podiatrist takes a lot of work. In Australia, students usually study for three or four years. They learn about many sciences like microbiology and biochemistry. They also study how the human body grows and works. To become a podiatric surgeon, the training is even longer. These students must complete a four-year degree and a master's degree. They also need several years of clinical experience to become a Fellow. This ensures they are ready to perform complex foot surgeries.

Podiatry looks different depending on where you live. In Canada, some people are called chiropodists. In the province of Ontario, podiatrists and chiropodists have different roles. Podiatrists in Ontario can perform surgery on the bones of the forefoot. In New Zealand, the profession began as chiropody in 1969. The first school there opened in 1970 at Petone. Today, the Auckland University of Technology provides this training. It is a field that helps people stay moving every day.
