This field also looks at hair and nails. Dermatologists are doctors who study these parts of the body. They can manage over 3,000 different conditions. Some issues are common, like hair loss or itchy skin. Other problems are very serious. For example, bad burns or certain infections can be life-threatening emergencies. Doctors must act quickly to help in these cases.

There are many ways a dermatologist helps a patient. They might use topical medications that you put on the skin. They may also give systemic medications that work inside the body. Some doctors use surgery to fix problems. They can also use radiation or light treatments. One method is called cryosurgery. This uses extreme cold to treat the skin. Another way is laser therapy. These tools help doctors treat many different skin diseases.

Learning to be a dermatologist takes a long time. In the United States, doctors must finish medical school first. After that, they do four years of extra training. This training includes a year as an intern. Then they do a three-year residency. Some doctors even do extra fellowships to learn more. They might study things like laser medicine or pediatric dermatology. In the United Kingdom, the training path is also very long. It includes medical school and several years of special training.

History shows us how this science grew. The word dermatology comes from the Greek word "derma." This word means skin. In 1708, a great school for this science opened. It was the Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris. Around that same time, the first textbooks were printed. One was written by Willan between 1798 and 1808. Another was an atlas by Alibert from 1806 to 1816. These books helped doctors learn about skin diseases.

Today, dermatology uses many new ideas. Some doctors use teledermatology to help people from far away. They use computers to see photos of skin problems.

This helps them treat minor issues quickly. Other scientists use comparative dermatology. They study skin in humans and animals, like dogs. This helps them understand how diseases work. Even the way we look at skin is changing. Some doctors work in cosmetic dermatology. They use tools like fillers to help people with their appearance.
