Skin care is the practice of keeping your skin healthy and looking good.

Your skin is actually the largest organ in your entire body. It works like a shield to protect you from germs and irritants. It also blocks ultraviolet light and helps regulate your body temperature. Skin care includes simple habits like washing and using lotion. It can also mean treating specific problems like acne or dryness.

Professionals like dermatologists and estheticians help people with their skin needs.

Different types of skin work in different ways. Some people have oily skin because their sebaceous glands make too much sebum. Sebum is a natural oil that helps keep moisture in the skin. While oily skin can lead to clogged pores or pimples, it may wrinkle less. Other people have dry skin that feels tight, itchy, or rough. For very dry skin, thick oil-based creams work best to hold moisture.

Drinking enough water can also help keep your skin hydrated.

Sun protection is a very important part of skin care. The sun gives us vitamin D, but too much sunlight can cause damage. Ultraviolet rays, or UV radiation, can cause sunburns and early aging. These rays can even increase the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen helps block these rays and comes in gels, creams, or lotions. You should apply it to all exposed areas before going outside.

Using a sunscreen with a high SPF number helps it work better.

Skin changes as people grow from babies to elderly adults. Babies need gentle cleaning, often with water or mild cleansers. Children and teens should use mild cleansers and wear sunscreen every day. As people get older, their skin may change in color or texture. Wrinkles often happen naturally due to aging, but smoking can make them look worse. The elderly may find that using warm water instead of hot water helps with dryness.

There are many rules for how skin products are sold. In the United States, the government puts products into two groups. Some are called cosmetics, while others are regulated as drugs. Prescription drugs must go through a very strict approval process. However, cosmetics do not need FDA approval before they are sold to people. In Europe, laws are very strict about safety and ban animal testing. This ensures that the products people use are safe and well-made.
