Moisturizer

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A moisturizer is a special product used to protect and soften your skin. These products are also called emollients. The word emollient comes from a Latin word that means to soften.

Your skin naturally makes its own oil called sebum to stay healthy. This oil helps keep your skin from getting too dry or brittle. Without enough moisture, your skin might become rigid or hard. A moisturizer helps your skin stay comfortable and soft. It acts like a helper for your body's natural skin barrier.

Water is always moving in and out of your body. It leaves your skin through a process called transepidermal water loss.

To stop this, moisturizers use two main types of ingredients. The first type is called occlusives. These create a waterproof coating on your skin to trap moisture inside. Ointments are very strong occlusives, while lotions are much lighter. The second type is called humectants. These are hydrophilic, which means they love water. They soak up moisture from the air or from deeper layers of your skin.

Many different things can be used to make these products. Some people use petrolatum, which is a very effective moisturizer.

It can reduce water loss by 50% to 75% for several hours. Other ingredients include cocoa butter, shea butter, and oils from plants. Companies often use oils from coconut, avocado, or corn. These plant oils are called renewable sources. Scientists also use mineral oils and waxes because they do not spoil easily. These ingredients help make the products last a long time on the shelf.

People use moisturizers for many different reasons and in many places.

They are used to treat skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. You can find moisturizer in many everyday items. It is in sunscreens, shaving creams, and even disposable diapers. Some products are used as a base for medicine, like Whitfield's ointment. There are many famous brands you might see in a store. These include names like Vaseline, Nivea, CeraVe, and Aveeno. Each brand uses different mixes of ingredients to help the skin.

It is important to use these products the right way.

Using too much moisturizer can sometimes cause skin irritation or allergies. Some products contain scents or food ingredients that might bother sensitive skin. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology gave a warning in 2014 about this. They noted that natural ingredients like coconut milk could cause new allergies. Also, be careful with products containing paraffin. In the U.K., paraffin was linked to 50 fire incidents between 2010 and 2018. Always follow the safety labels on your skin creams.
