Moisturizer

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Water constantly leaves your skin. This is called transepidermal water loss. Your skin stays healthy by keeping water inside. It needs this water to stay soft. If skin gets too dry, it can become brittle.

Moisturizers help protect your skin. They use two main ways to work. The first way is with occlusives. These make a coating on your skin. This coating stops water from escaping. Ointments are very good at this. They are thicker than lotions or creams.

The second way uses humectants. These are parts that soak up water. They can pull water from the air. They can also pull water from deep inside your skin. Most products use both types together.

Many people use these products. They help with itchy skin or eczema. You can find them in sunscreens and soaps too. Some people use oils from plants like coconut or avocado.

Be careful with some products. Some creams use paraffin. This can catch fire easily. It is also wise not to use too much cream. Using it too much might cause skin irritation.
