It is a mix of hydrocarbons. These are parts made from oil. The gel is a semi-solid. This means it holds its shape like a solid. But it can also fit into a container like a liquid.

In 1859, workers in Pennsylvania found a wax on oil rigs. They used it to help heal cuts and burns. A chemist named Robert Chesebrough studied this wax. He used a way called distillation to clean it. Distillation is a set of steps to separate liquids. He made a light gel and patented it in 1872.

This jelly helps the skin in many ways. It acts as a skin protectant. This means it helps keep skin safe. It stops moisture from leaving your body. You can use it on dry lips or chapped hands. It can also help doctors keep skin moist after surgery. People even use it to coat metal tools. This keeps water away so they do not rust. It can even help keep swimmers warm in cold water.
