It is a mixture of hydrocarbons, which are substances made from oil. This substance is a semi-solid. This means it stays in one shape like a solid. However, it can also spread into a container like a liquid. It is often used as a skin protectant. This helps keep the skin safe and healthy. It can also be used for many different jobs in homes and factories.

There are many ways this jelly works to protect things. One way is by stopping moisture from leaving the skin. This helps people with dry lips or chapped hands. It can even help keep swimmers warm while they are in cold water. The jelly also works as a coating for many items. It can stop metal tools from rusting by keeping water away. It can even be used to coat the inside of a terrarium. This helps stop small animals from crawling out of their homes.

People have used oil products for a very long time. In 1273, Marco Polo wrote about people moving oil by camels and ships. They used it as an ointment for skin problems. Later, in 1859, workers in Pennsylvania found a wax on oil rigs. They thought it helped heal cuts and burns. A chemist named Robert Chesebrough studied this material.

He wanted to see if he could make it useful for everyone.

Chesebrough used a special way to make the jelly pure. He used vacuum distillation to clean the material. Distillation is a way to separate parts of a liquid. He also filtered the leftover material through bone char. This made the gel light in color. He patented his new process in 1872. He also started a factory in Brooklyn in 1870. He named his most famous brand Vaseline.

Today, you might see petroleum jelly in your bathroom or medicine cabinet. It is a common ingredient in many lotions and cosmetics. Some people even use it to help clean makeup off their faces. It can be used on leather boots to make them shine. It can even be used to make zippers move more easily. You might even see it used in sports. For example, football players sometimes put it on their gloves to make them stickier.
