Foundation is a type of makeup used on the face and neck. It can come in a liquid, cream, or powder form. People use it to create an even skin color. It can also hide flaws or change a person's natural skin tone. Some foundations do more than just change color. They might act as a moisturizer or a sunscreen too.

When people apply it to their whole body, it is often called body painting or body makeup.

There are many ways to put foundation on your skin. You can use your fingers to create a natural look. The warmth from your hands helps the makeup melt into your skin. Some people prefer using a sponge. A wet sponge can help spread the makeup evenly. You might also use a brush with soft bristles. A dense brush helps prevent streaky marks on your face.

Some artists even use an airbrush to spray tiny droplets onto the skin.

People have used cosmetics to change their look for a very long time. In ancient Greece and Rome, women used white lead powder to look pale. This was a dangerous habit that could cause sickness or death. During the 1700s, King Louis XV made lead makeup popular for men. In the 1800s, Queen Victoria thought makeup was only for actors. Some women even ate chalk to try to make their skin look whiter.

These old methods were often very risky for the people using them.

Modern foundation started with people working in theaters. Carl Baudin invented a greasepaint paste to hide the line between a wig and a forehead. He used fats and colors like zinc white and ochre. Later, Max Factor created a famous product called Pan-Cake in 1937. It was the first foundation and powder in one single product. It used talc instead of oil to look more natural.

By 1940, one in three women in North America owned Pan-Cake.

Today, finding the right foundation is all about color and coverage. Companies use names like Warm, Neutral, Olive, or Cool to match skin tones. Some brands offer many different shades to help everyone find a match. For example, Haus Labs by Lady Gaga has 51 different shades. You can also choose how much color you want to show. Sheer makeup is very light and see-through. Full coverage makeup is thick and can hide things like scars.
