Healthcare professionals in this field are called podiatrists. They play a vital role in maintaining human mobility and health. By understanding how the lower body functions, they help prevent and treat many physical issues. This medical specialty is practiced in many different countries around the world.

To become a podiatrist, students must undergo an intensive and broad medical education. In the United States, the curriculum covers a wide range of scientific subjects. Students study anatomy to learn the structure of the body and physiology to understand how it functions. They also study biochemistry, neurobiology, and microbiology to grasp the microscopic processes of life. Other essential subjects include pharmacology, which is the study of medicines, and biomechanics, which examines how the body moves.

This deep scientific foundation allows them to handle complex patient needs.

In Australia, the training process is highly structured and follows specific professional levels. Most students complete an undergraduate degree that lasts between three and four years. The first two years focus heavily on biomedical sciences like pathophysiology and histology. The later years shift toward podiatry-specific expertise, such as human gait and podopaediatrics.

Some practitioners may also specialize in areas like wound care, diabetes, or sports medicine. This training ensures they can manage everything from minor nail issues to complex vascular medicine.

Some podiatrists pursue even more advanced training to become podiatric surgeons. In Australia, these specialists must meet the requirements for Fellowship with the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons. This path includes a four-year degree and a master's degree. The master's level covers advanced topics like medical imaging and clinical pathology.

After completing a master's degree, they must work as a Registrar for three to five years. They also undergo clinical rotations in other medical disciplines and must pass difficult oral and written exams. These surgeons are highly trained to perform complex operations on the feet.

Podiatry has a very long history that stretches back to ancient times. Bas-relief carvings in Egypt from about 2400 BC show that people cared for feet long ago. By the 19th century, podiatrists were often independent physicians. Notable historical figures even relied on them, including Napoleon and various French kings. During the U.S. Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln even sent his podiatrist, Isachar Zachrie, on confidential missions. The professionalization of the field continued with the first podiatric society in New York in 1895.

Regulations and rights for podiatrists vary significantly depending on the country and region. In Australia, podiatrists must register with the Podiatry Board of Australia. Their ability to prescribe medicines depends on the specific state they practice in. For example, in some states, podiatrists with specific endorsements can prescribe Schedule 4 poisons. In Canada, the profession is also divided by province. In Ontario, a distinction is made between podiatrists and chiropodists. Podiatrists in Ontario are required to hold a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree and may perform surgery on the bones of the forefoot.

In New Zealand, the profession was originally known as chiropody before being renamed podiatry in 1969. The first dedicated school opened in Petone in 1970 under the direction of John Gallocher. Today, the Auckland University of Technology is the primary provider of podiatry training in that nation. Regardless of the specific local laws, the goal of the profession remains the same. Podiatrists connect various medical fields, such as orthopaedics, neurology, and surgery, to help people walk and move with ease.
