Environmental biotechnology

Environmental biotechnology is a field of science focused on the natural environment. It involves studying biological systems to help the planet. This science also uses biological processes for commercial uses that are environmentally responsible. The International Society for Environmental Biotechnology defines this field through its goals. It seeks the development, use, and regulation of biological systems. These systems are used for the remediation of contaminated land, air, and water. They also support green manufacturing technologies and sustainable development.

This field works by optimizing the use of many different living organisms. Scientists look at plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, and algae. These organisms work within integrated systems to create resources. In these systems, the by-products of one process serve as inputs for another. This creates a cycle that produces renewable energy, food, and nutrients. One specific example is the use of anaerobic digestion technologies. This process allows for biogas production, which helps achieve food security and climate change mitigation.

There are several ways scientists apply these biological tools to industrial problems. One method involves studying microbes found in polluted sites. For instance, starch plant effluents can pollute local lakes or ponds. These starch deposits are often hard for most microorganisms to degrade. Scientists scan microbes from these sites for specific genomic changes. They look for changes that allow the microbes to utilize the starch better. Once identified, these modified genes can be cloned into industrially significant microorganisms. This process helps in the pharmaceutical industry and other fermentation processes.

Another important application involves cleaning up marine oil spills. To do this, scientists look for microbes in oil-rich environments. These environments include locations like oil wells and oil transfer pipelines. Some microbes in these areas have the potential to degrade oil. They actually use the oil as an energy source. By using these natural capabilities, biotechnology provides a remedy for spills in the ocean.

Biotechnology also plays a role in protecting agricultural land. Some microbes can be isolated from soils contaminated with pesticides. These specific microbes are capable of using pesticides as an energy source. Scientists can mix these microbes with bio-fertilizers. This serves as an insurance against increased pesticide-toxicity levels on farms. Such methods support agroecological practices and zero-waste agriculture. These advancements help meet the Millennium Development Goals.

However, using biotechnology requires a careful environmental risk assessment. Introducing new or modified microorganisms can create an imbalance in an ecosystem. The mutual harmony that exists in a natural environment may face alteration. Non-native organisms might disrupt existing ecological balances. This is why scientists must weigh the applications against the implications. While humans have used breeding and genetic modification to optimize crop yields, there can be unexpected outcomes. These outcomes may affect both human health and the environment.

Understanding this field requires looking at both benefits and risks. Many textbooks address the applications of these biotechnologies. For example, environmental engineering texts often cover sewage treatment and biological principles. These are frequently considered environmental biotechnology texts. However, books focusing on the implications of the technology are different. They often address potential impacts or even catastrophic events. Balancing the power of manipulating genetic material is the core challenge of environmental biotechnology.
