Bioremediation

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tiny living things can clean our world. This way of cleaning is called bioremediation. It uses living things like bacteria, fungi, and plants. These organisms can remove pollutants from air, water, and soil. This helps make our environment safe again.

Some cleaning happens right where the mess is. We call this in situ. People help by adding nutrients, like vitamins or minerals. They might also add oxygen. Adding oxygen helps bacteria break down oil and fuel. This process can turn bad things into carbon dioxide and water.

Other cleaning happens after moving the dirt. This is called ex situ. People might pile up the soil in big heaps. These are called biopiles. They use air to help the tiny cleaners work. Another way is called windrows. This is like making compost. Workers turn the soil to let in more air.

Bioremediation is often cheap and eco-friendly. However, it is a slow way to clean. It works well for oil. It is harder for heavy metals like lead. Metals cannot be broken down, but they can be moved.
