Nature has a way to recycle everything. When living things die, they break down. This is called decomposition.

This process turns dead things into simpler parts. These parts include water and minerals. They also include gases like carbon dioxide. This helps the Earth reuse matter.

Many living things help with this work. We call these living things decomposers. Bacteria and fungi are the main decomposers. They are very small. Larger animals also help. For example, earthworms work in the soil. Insects like flies and beetles are also important.

Decomposition happens in stages. For animals, it starts with the fresh stage. Then comes the bloat stage. This happens because gases build up inside. Next is active decay. This is when most weight is lost. After that is advanced decay. Finally, only dry remains like bones are left.

The speed of this work changes. Warm weather makes it go faster. Cold weather makes it go slower.
