Detritivores are animals that eat dead things.

They eat dead plant parts and animal parts. They also eat waste. This food is called detritus.

These eaters help the earth recycle. They shred dead plants into small bits. This helps other decomposers. Decomposers are things like fungi that break down matter. Shredding the plants lets out trapped nutrients. These are good things like carbon and nitrogen. These nutrients go back into the soil. Then, new plants can use them to grow.

Many animals are detritivores. Earthworms and slugs are common examples. You can find millipedes and woodlice too. Some live in the sea. We call these bottom feeders. In the desert, they live in burrows. This keeps them away from the hot surface.

Without these animals, dead plants would pile up everywhere. They keep nature clean and healthy.
