Many bacteria, fungi, and protists are decomposers, but they are not detritivores. These organisms use saprotrophic nutrition, which means they absorb nutrients on a molecular scale. They cannot ingest large, discrete lumps of matter like a detritivore can. Instead, they rely on the smaller pieces that detritivores have already broken down.

Scientists classify detritivores into different groups based on their size and where they live. Larger organisms, such as millipedes, springtails, and woodlice, are called macrodetritivores. Smaller organisms, such as certain bacteria, are referred to as microdetritivores. You can find these creatures in almost any environment with organic soil. In marine ecosystems, they are often called bottom feeders. Examples of marine detritivores include sea stars, sea cucumbers, fiddler crabs, and certain worms like the Terebellidae family.

Detritivores are vital for the flow of energy and biogeochemical cycles. They reintroduce essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and potassium into the soil. There are also specialized ways that detritivores feed. Some animals engage in xylophagy, which is the consumption of wood. If an animal feeds only on dead wood, this is called sapro-xylophagy. While scavengers are different because they eat much larger quantities of organic matter, both belong to consumer-resource systems. However, detritivores must be careful in their environment. By feeding directly on sediments to extract organic matter, some can incidentally concentrate toxic pollutants in their bodies.
