Their bodies are divided into many parts called segments, or metameres. They do not have any bones to hold them up. Instead, they use a hydrostatic skeleton. This is a structure made of fluid held under pressure inside chambers called a coelom. To move, they use two layers of muscle. One layer goes around the body, and the other runs from head to tail. They also have tiny hairs called setae on their segments.

Earthworms have a very special way of sensing the world. They do not have eyes like we do. Instead, they have special light cells called the light cells of Hess. This part helps the worm feel its surroundings. Some worms even use it to grab leaves and grass.

If a predator touches the back of a worm, the signal travels forward. This makes the muscles contract so the worm can hide quickly. Some worms, like the blue squirter, can even squirt fluid to scare threats away.

Earthworms can be found almost anywhere with the right soil and water. Most are small, but some can grow quite large. The Lumbricus terrestris is a common type that grows to a certain length. However, the longest worm on record is the Amynthas mekongianus. This worm can grow up to 3 meters long!

You might find them near the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Earthworms are also hermaphrodites, which means each worm has both male and female parts. When they mate, they exchange sperm to make new life.

Earthworms are vital to our planet's ecosystems. They act as detritivores, which means they eat dead organic matter. They also act as coprophages by consuming waste. This process helps recycle nutrients back into the earth.

The body of an earthworm is a complex structure. It uses a tube-within-a-tube body plan. This means there is an outer body and an inner digestive tube. The body is divided into many segments called metameres. These segments compartmentalize the worm's internal systems. To stay upright, they use a hydrostatic skeleton. They do not have bones like humans do. Instead, they use fluid-filled chambers called a coelom. The pressure of the fluid inside the coelom provides their shape.

Movement is achieved through a combination of muscles and tiny hairs. An earthworm has two main muscle layers. The outer layer consists of circular muscles. The inner layer is made of thicker longitudinal muscles. By contracting these muscles, the worm can change its shape to crawl. To prevent slipping, they use bristle-like hairs called setae. These setae are located on most segments. They act like tiny anchors in the dirt.

Some species even use special ventral setae to anchor themselves during mating. This combination of muscle and grip allows for efficient movement.

Inside the worm, several systems work to keep it alive. The digestive tract runs straight from the mouth to the anus. It does not coil like a human intestine. To manage waste, they have organs called nephridia. These are also known as metanephridia. A structure called a nephrostome collects fluid from the coelom. The nephridia then filter this fluid to remove metabolic waste. This waste is expelled through pores called nephridiopores on the sides of the body. This system ensures that the internal fluid remains clean and pressurized.

The nervous system allows the worm to react to its environment. It starts with a brain made of two cerebral ganglia. These are located in the third body segment. A ring of nerves connects the brain to sub-pharyngeal ganglia. Below these, a ventral nerve cord runs the entire length of the body. This cord contains giant axons, which are very large nerve fibers. There is one medial giant axon (MGA) and two lateral giant axons (LGAs). These axons carry emergency signals at very high speeds.

The MGA transmits signals at 32.2 meters per second. The LGAs transmit at 12.6 meters per second. These fast signals trigger reflex escape behaviors to avoid predators.

Earthworms sense their world using specialized cells. They do not have eyes, but they can still detect light. They use photoreceptor cells known as the light cells of Hess. These cells contain a central cavity called a phasma. This allows the worm to perceive light levels without traditional vision. Near the mouth, the worm has many chemoreceptors. These help the worm sense chemicals in the soil. The first segment also has a fleshy lobe called a prostomium. This lobe helps the worm feel and chemically sense its surroundings.

Earthworms are found all over the world wherever conditions are right. Most species are small, but size can vary greatly. The common Lumbricus terrestris grows to a standard length. However, the Amynthas mekongianus is much larger. This species can reach lengths of up to 3 meters.
