Later, Karl Rudolphi used the Greek word for thread to name them. He called them Nematoidea in 1808. Other scientists like Nathan Cobb and Potts helped define them as a phylum. A phylum is a large group used to classify living things.

The physical structure of a nematode is quite unique compared to other worms. Unlike flatworms, nematodes possess a tubular digestive system. This means their gut is a tube with openings at both ends. Their bodies are often very small and slender. Many species are microscopic, often measuring less than 2.5 mm in length. Some soil species reach 7 mm, while marine species can grow to 5 cm. Certain parasitic types are much larger, sometimes exceeding 50 cm.

To move, nematodes use a specialized system called a hydroskeleton. They lack the circular muscles found in many other animals. Instead, they have a thick, protective outer layer called a cuticle. This cuticle is made of a strong material called collagen. Underneath the epidermis lies a layer of longitudinal muscle cells. The rigid cuticle provides resistance, so when the muscles contract, the worm moves.

Interestingly, their nervous system is organized differently than most animals. In nematodes, projections run from the muscle cells toward the nerve cords. In most other animals, the nerve fibers extend into the muscles instead.

Scientists have spent centuries trying to classify these complex animals. Carl Linnaeus first described several nematode genera, such as Ascaris, in 1758. In 1808, Karl Rudolphi used the Greek word for thread to create the name Nematoidea. The name itself comes from the Modern Latin "nema," meaning thread, and "-odes," meaning like. Over time, different scientists proposed different ways to group them. Nathan Cobb argued for the name "Nemata" in 1919, while Potts helped establish Nematoda as a phylum in 1932.

Because many nematode species look very similar, counting them is difficult. Estimates of their total number vary wildly among researchers. Some surveys suggest there are over 25,000 species. Other studies, using DNA barcoding, place the number closer to one million species. Nematodes are numerically dominant across the entire planet. They account for about 80% of all individual animals on Earth. In the ocean, they represent 90% of all animals found on the sea floor.
