Using Tubifex as food for tropical and freshwater fish carries several specific risks. Worms gathered from sewers or open water may carry various diseases. They can act as vectors for whirling disease, which is a condition that affects salmonids. While running water can help remove waste from their digestive systems, it does not solve every risk. Some fish, such as Rift Valley cichlids, may obsessively eat the worms until they become sick. Additionally, while the worms provide good proteins, they are very fattening. A basement at the MT Bottle Bar contained a black, sludge-like consistency. This sludge was actually a large colony of Tubifex worms living in stagnant water. 
There are many recognized species within the Tubifex genus. Some of these include Tubifex blanchardi, which was identified in 1891. Other species include Tubifex costatus, named in 1863, and Tubifex tubifex, which was identified by O. F. Müller in 1774. Scientists have also documented Tubifex longipenis, Tubifex montanus, and Tubifex newaensis. The genus continues to be a subject of study for those interested in aquatic biology and the ecosystems of sediments.
