Underwater diving is the practice of going below the water's surface. People dive to explore the world or to do important work.

Some people dive for fun, which is called recreational diving. Others dive for a job, which is called professional diving. There are also military divers and public safety divers. Diving can be a very dangerous activity because the ocean is a hard place for humans.

When you dive, the water pushes on your body. This push is called ambient pressure. As you go deeper, the pressure gets much stronger. This pressure can cause barotrauma, which is physical damage to your body. Barotrauma happens when gas inside your body cannot change with the pressure outside. It often affects your ears or your sinuses.

This can happen when you are going down or coming up. If the pressure is not managed, it can cause injury.

Your body also reacts to being in the water. Humans have something called a diving reflex. This is a way the body tries to save oxygen. It sends blood to your heart and your brain.

This reflex is also seen in animals like seals and dolphins. However, water can also be very cold. Sudden cold can cause a cold shock response. This might make a person breathe in water by accident. Cold water can also lead to hypothermia, which is when your body temperature drops too low.

Humans have built many tools to help them stay underwater. Some people use scuba gear to breathe. Others use surface-supplied diving, where air comes from above.

Some divers wear special suits called atmospheric diving suits to block the pressure. There are even robotic machines called ROVs.

These machines can go to the very bottom of the ocean. This helps keep humans safe from the deep water.

People have been diving for a very long time. Evidence shows that prehistoric people may have hunted for seafood underwater. Breath-hold diving, where you hold your breath, goes back to classical times.

Modern breathing systems developed much faster after the Second World War. Today, there are many rules to keep divers safe. Professional diving is often regulated by safety laws. Recreational diving might not have the same rules. Divers must use the right training and equipment to stay safe.
