Freediving

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Freediving is a way to explore the underwater world using only your breath. Instead of using heavy tanks of air, divers use a skill called apnea. This means they hold their breath while they dive until they must come back up to the surface.

People do this for many different reasons. Some dive to find food or beautiful things from the sea. Others do it as a sport to see how deep or how long they can stay under. It is a way to feel the quiet of the ocean.

There are many ways to practice this skill today. Some people go spearfishing to hunt for fish using a speargun. This can be done with a snorkel or by freediving. Other people play exciting games in swimming pools. In underwater hockey, players use sticks to move a puck along the bottom.

In underwater football, teams pass a ball while they are completely submerged. There is even a sport called aquathlon. In this game, two people wrestle underwater to pull a ribbon off an ankle band.

Humans have been freediving for thousands of years. In ancient Greece, divers used heavy weights called skandalopetra to sink quickly. They did this to collect sponges and red coral from the deep.

Divers were also very important during wars. They could swim past enemy blockades to carry messages or supplies. In 332 BC, during the Siege of Tyre, divers even cut the anchor cables of attacking ships. This shows how brave and skilled these divers had to be.

Pearl diving is another very old tradition. In Japan, ama divers have collected pearls for about 2,000 years.

Many pearls were also found in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. In the Sulu Archipelago near the Philippines, divers found very large pearls. Sometimes, these pearls were so special that they belonged only to a sultan. In the United States, a woman named Dottie Frazier helped start freediving for women in 1940. She even began teaching classes and making rubber suits.

Freediving connects many different talents together. Synchronized swimming is a beautiful mix of dance, gymnastics, and swimming.

These swimmers must have great strength and very good breath control. They perform routines to music while upside down underwater. Competitive freediving is also a way to test the limits of the human body. Athletes try to reach great depths or stay underwater for a long time.
