Water is heavy. It pushes on your body with a force called pressure. As you go deeper, the pressure gets much stronger. This can cause barotrauma. Barotrauma is physical damage to body parts. It often happens in the ears or sinuses. This happens when gas inside your body cannot change with the pressure outside.

Water can also be very cold. This can lead to hypothermia. Hypothermia is when your body temperature gets too low. Cold water makes your muscles lose strength. It can also make your heart work much harder.

Humans use tools to dive safely. Some people use scuba gear to breathe. Others use heavy suits to stay safe from pressure.

Some people even use robotic machines. These are called ROVs. They can go to the very bottom of the ocean. This keeps humans safe from the deep, dark water.
