Scuba set

A scuba set is a special tool that lets people breathe underwater. The name SCUBA is actually an acronym. It stands for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.

This means the diver carries everything they need to breathe on their own. They do not need a long hose connected to the surface. This gives divers much more freedom to move around. They can swim much further and stay underwater longer than people who just hold their breath.

There are two main ways a scuba set works. The first way is called open-circuit demand scuba. In this system, a regulator reduces the pressure from a storage cylinder. When the diver inhales, they pull fresh gas from a demand valve. When they exhale, the gas is released into the water.

The second way is called a rebreather. A rebreather recycles the gas the diver breathes out. It removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen back into the circuit. This allows the diver to use the same gas many times.

People have been working on these tools for a long time. Major Christian Lambertsen helped create the name SCUBA in 1952. He was a doctor in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He first called his invention "Laru." Later, he chose the name SCUBA instead.

Another important invention was the open-circuit system. This was made in 1943 by two Frenchmen named Émile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Cousteau also came up with the name Aqua-Lung for English speakers.

Divers carry their heavy gear in different ways. Many people use a back mount to carry tanks on their backs. This is very common for recreational diving. Some divers prefer a side-mount style. This is helpful if they need to swim through tight spaces like caves.

Other divers use a sling mount for special sets. Divers must always watch their pressure gauge to monitor their gas. This helps them stay safe by knowing when they need to surface.

Scuba diving is used for many different jobs today. Some people dive just for fun or as a hobby. Others are professionals like scientists who study marine biology or geology.

Some divers work in the military or for police search and rescue teams. They might look for things in bodies of water. Even underwater photographers use scuba to take beautiful pictures of the sea. It is a way to explore a whole different world.
