A flood is when water covers land that is usually dry.

This can happen in many different ways.

Sometimes, water overflows from rivers or lakes. This happens when there is too much rain or fast snowmelt. Large rivers can have slow floods. Small rivers or steep valleys can have flash floods. These move very quickly and can be quite sudden.

Other floods come from the sea. A storm surge is a sudden rise in ocean water. This is caused by big storms or cyclones.

This water can push onto the land near the coast.

Floods can also happen on flat ground. This is called an areal flood. It occurs when the soil is saturated. Saturated means the ground is full of water and cannot hold more. The extra water just stays on top.

Some people use floods on purpose. This is called controlled inundation. Farmers use this to grow rice in paddy fields. It can also be used for military needs or to manage rivers.
