Floods happen when too much water arrives at once. This can hurt homes, farms, and fish.

Bad floods often have a sharp spike in water levels. This means the water rises very quickly.

People use many ways to manage these floods. Some use structural methods. These are physical ways to hold back water. People build levees, which are banks or walls. They also build dams to hold water in reservoirs.

These dams can even make power for us.

Other ways are non-structural. These do not use big walls. Instead, they use plans and maps. Flood risk maps show where water might go. This helps people stay safe. Some people use strategic retreat. This means moving buildings away from flood zones. They might turn those areas into parks.

We can also use nature to help. Marshes act like sponges. They soak up water and slow it down. This helps the water flow more slowly. This is a good way to protect towns.
