A floodplain is land next to a river.

It stretches from the river banks to the valley walls. These areas flood when a river has a high discharge. High discharge means the river is carrying a lot of water.

Floodplains form in a few ways. Rivers often curve in loops called meanders. The water hits the outside of a curve and wears it away. This is called erosion. At the same time, the water drops sand and gravel on the inside of the curve. This builds up a point bar. This slow change makes the floodplain flat.

Sometimes, a river has too much water for its channel. The water flows over the banks. This is called overbank flow. It leaves behind thin layers of mud and sand. This builds up the land. It can also make natural levees. These are ridges along the river banks.

These lands are very special for nature. Floods bring nutrients to the soil. This makes the ground rich for plants and farming. Many fish also use these wet areas to lay eggs.
