Deforestation is the removal of trees from a forest. This happens when land is changed to a different use.

People often turn forest land into farms or ranches. Some areas are cleared to build cities. Forests cover about 31% of Earth's land surface today. This is one-third less than before agriculture expanded. About half of that loss happened in the last century.

Most deforestation happens because of agriculture. In 2012, more than 80% of forest loss was for farming.

Forests are turned into plantations for coffee, rubber, and palm oil. Livestock grazing also drives this change. Other causes include the wood industry, mining, and urbanization. Climate change can also cause more wildfires. These fires lead to even more tree loss.

Losing forests causes many problems for our planet. It destroys habitats, which are homes for living things. This leads to a loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of different plants and animals. Deforestation can cause animals and plants to go extinct. It also changes local climates and affects indigenous people.

Forests are very important for the air we breathe. They help by taking in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This process is called carbon sequestration. It helps to slow down climate change. When forests are gone, this help is reduced. Since 1990, about 420 million hectares of forest have been lost. Between 2015 and 2020, the rate was 10 million hectares per year.

We can see how our choices affect the world. For example, the things we buy can drive forest loss. Patterns of trade and consumption are linked to deforestation. In G7 countries, people cause an average loss of 3.9 trees per person each year. This is often linked to imports like coffee.

Even though the rate of loss has slowed, it is still a big job to protect our forests.
