The mechanism of environmental science relies on combining many different types of knowledge. It uses an integrated and quantitative approach, meaning scientists use math to measure data. Modern environmental science began to take shape through significant scientific milestones. In 1735, Carolus Linnaeus introduced binomial nomenclature to classify all living organisms. In the 1820s, scientists began studying how gases in the atmosphere interact with heat from the sun. By the late 19th century, researchers suggested that greenhouse gases caused the Earth to warm. In the 1940s, scientists noticed a 1.3 degrees Celsius temperature anomaly in the Atlantic Ocean. This discovery renewed interest in the greenhouse effect, which is the process of gases trapping heat in the atmosphere.
The field became a major public priority during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1962, Rachel Carson published her landmark book, Silent Spring, which encouraged the public to seek environmental safeguards. This period also saw major disasters, such as the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and the Cuyahoga River catching fire. These events led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 1970. The first Earth Day was also celebrated worldwide in 1970. These moments proved that scientific investigation was necessary for government policy and public safety.

Significant discoveries in the late 20th century led to global cooperation. In 1985, a British team discovered a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. This discovery inspired the Montreal Protocol to ban harmful chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. Other major events included the Three Mile Island meltdown in 1979 and the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. These incidents raised concerns about radioactive waste and nuclear energy safety. In response to these challenges, the International Panel on Climate Change was formed to focus on solutions for climate change and degradation.

In the 21st century, environmental science focuses heavily on global climate modeling. The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2016, is a major international effort to limit global warming. This treaty aims to restrict the Earth's temperature rise to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius. Many countries have signed this agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists continue to study the effects of rising temperatures and crude oil pollution. Through international cooperation, the field works to minimize the potential damages to our global systems.
