Around 6000 BCE, civilizations in Israel and Jordan collapsed due to deforestation, which is the clearing of forests. In 2700 BCE, Mesopotamia established the first legislation to limit this practice. In 2500 BCE, communities in the Indus River Valley manipulated water flow to improve sanitation. Around 1500 BCE, Central American city-states faced collapse from soil erosion caused by intensive agriculture. Even the Minoan civilization on Crete declined around 1450 BCE due to the degradation of natural resources.
