Ethnobiology is a special way of studying the world. It looks at the connections between people, living things, and their environments.

This field brings together many different sciences. It uses ideas from biology, medicine, and social studies. By looking at these links, scientists can understand how humans and nature work together. This helps us find better ways to protect our planet and live sustainably.

Scientists in this field follow many different paths to learn. They might study how a group uses plants for food or medicine. They also look at how people use animals for hunting or farming. Some researchers study how different cultures name and sort living things. This is called taxonomy, which is a way of grouping things together. They may also explore spiritual or symbolic meanings people give to nature. Every culture has its own unique way of seeing the world around them.

This way of studying has changed a lot over many years. In the 17th century, Georg Eberhard Rumphius used local knowledge to list 1,200 plant species in Indonesia. Later, Carl Linnaeus used that work to help build his famous system for naming life. In the 19th century, Charles Darwin also learned from the local knowledge of people he met. By the 1950s, the field began to change again. Researchers like Harold Conklin started studying how cultures relate to the plant world.

Today, ethnobiology is a very large and busy field of study. It has many smaller parts, called subdisciplines, that focus on specific things. Ethnobotany is one part that focuses on the link between humans and plants. Ethnozoology is another part that looks at the link between humans and animals. There is also ethnoecology, which studies how people manage entire ecosystems. These studies help other scientists who work in ecology or conservation biology. This research is now taught in many universities around the world.

Learning about these connections requires great care and respect. In the past, researchers sometimes took knowledge without giving anything back. Modern ethnobiologists must follow strict rules to be fair. They must respect the intellectual property of the people they study. This means protecting the rights to ideas and traditional knowledge. It is important to get permission before starting any work. Scientists want to make sure their work helps the communities they visit.
