Sustainable energy is the practice of meeting our current power needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

This concept was famously described by the United Nations Brundtland Commission in their 1987 report, "Our Common Future." While there is no single global definition, sustainability is generally measured through three dimensions: environmental, economic, and social. The environmental dimension focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting biodiversity. The economic dimension looks at energy security and the efficient use of resources. The social dimension ensures that energy is affordable, reliable, and respects human rights.

To understand how energy affects the planet, we must look at the mechanics of combustion and emissions. Most of the world's energy currently comes from burning fossil fuels, which provide 85% of global consumption.

When these fuels burn, they release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases are responsible for 76% of annual human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. This process can also lead to the formation of acid rain when emissions combine with oxygen. Furthermore, energy production requires significant water; about 10% of global water use goes toward cooling thermal energy plants. This can lead to water scarcity in dry regions.

Different energy sources have distinct characteristics and impacts. Renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal, are generally more sustainable because they emit far fewer greenhouse gases.

However, these sources are often intermittent, meaning power output varies based on when the wind blows or the sun shines. This variability requires electrical grid upgrades and new energy storage solutions. Nuclear power is another option that does not produce carbon or air pollution. Yet, it carries unique challenges, including the management of radioactive waste and the risks of accidents or nuclear proliferation.

Transitioning to sustainable energy also involves addressing severe human health and social issues. Currently, around 790 million people in developing countries lack access to electricity.

Additionally, 2.6 billion people must rely on polluting fuels like wood, charcoal, or animal dung for cooking. This reliance on biomass and fossil fuel pollution causes an estimated 7 million deaths every year. These health impacts are often concentrated among women and young children. To mitigate these risks and limit global warming, the world must move toward "net-zero" emissions by mid-century. This requires a massive transformation in how we produce, distribute, and consume energy.

Energy efficiency serves as a cornerstone for these sustainability strategies. Efficiency means using less energy to deliver the same service or good.

For example, improving the technical efficiency of appliances, vehicles, and buildings can reduce the total energy demand. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that increasing efficiency could achieve 40% of the emission reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement goals. We can also change behaviors, such as using public transport or cycling instead of driving cars.

However, we must watch for the "rebound effect," where consumers use saved money to purchase more energy-intensive goods, such as larger homes or vehicles.

Achieving these goals requires significant investment and policy changes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that 2.5% of world gross domestic product (GDP) must be invested in the energy system annually between 2016 and 2035 to limit warming to 1.5 °C. Governments play a vital role by funding research into new technologies and building infrastructure for electrification. They can also use policies like carbon pricing or phasing out fossil fuel subsidies to encourage clean energy. By 2025, investment in the energy transition had already grown to about twice the amount invested in fossil fuels.

Finally, the move toward sustainability connects to broader global development goals. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 specifically calls for universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy by 2030. This includes providing clean cooking facilities to improve human health and gender equality. As wind and solar market shares continue to grow, new technologies like hydrogen fuel may help power processes that are difficult to electrify. By integrating these diverse technologies and policies, society can work toward a system that supports both economic growth and a stable climate.
