It is also called crude oil. It is a mix of hydrocarbons. These are tiny parts made of carbon and hydrogen.

Petroleum formed over millions of years. It came from tiny sea life like plankton and algae. These living things died and were buried. This process made the oil we find today. Most oil formed during the Mesozoic era.

People find oil by studying the ground. They often drill deep holes to reach it.

Once they get the oil, they must refine it. Refining is a way to clean and separate the oil. This makes many useful things. We use it for gasoline and jet fuel. It also helps make plastics, paint, and medicine.

Using petroleum can be hard on our world. Burning it lets out greenhouse gases. These gases can change our climate. Oil spills can also hurt the water.
