earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Oil and gas hide deep underground. They are found in places called reservoirs. A reservoir is a group of oil or gas held in rock.

These reservoirs form from tiny living things. Long ago, tiny plants and animals died in the sea. They fell to the bottom and were buried by mud. Heat and pressure from the Earth changed them. This change made them into oil and gas.

Oil and gas are lighter than water. This causes them to rise through the rock. To stay in one place, they need a trap. A trap is a way that rock stops them from rising. Most traps are structural traps. These form when the rock folds or breaks. A seal, or cap rock, acts like a lid. It stops the oil from leaking out.

Some rocks do not have a lid. These are called unconventional reservoirs. In these rocks, the oil is stuck tightly. People use special ways to get it out. There are more than 65,000 oil fields in the world. Some are on land. Many others are far out at sea.
