Petroleum reservoir

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A petroleum reservoir is a place deep underground where oil and gas collect. These reservoirs are found inside rock formations that have tiny holes or cracks.

Some reservoirs are called conventional because they are easy to reach. Others are called unconventional because the oil is stuck tightly in the rock. These underground pools are very important to people around the world. They provide the energy needed for many things we use every day.

How does a reservoir form? It all starts with tiny living things like plankton and algae. When these organisms die, they sink to the bottom of the sea. Over a long time, layers of sand and mud bury them deep under the Earth.

High heat and heavy pressure act like a slow cooker on this material. This process turns the old life into liquid hydrocarbons, which we call oil and gas. Because oil and gas are lighter than water, they begin to rise upward through the rock. They keep moving until they hit a layer of rock that they cannot pass through. This layer is called a seal or a cap rock.

Scientists have studied these rocks for a long time to find where they hide. Geologists look for different types of traps that hold the oil in place. A structural trap happens when the Earth's crust folds or breaks, creating a shape like a dome. A stratigraphic trap happens when the type of rock changes suddenly. There is also a rare type called a hydrodynamic trap caused by water pressure.

Finding these spots is a very hard job that requires special tools. Experts use many different methods to probe the edges of these hidden fields.

There are more than 65,000 oil fields scattered across our planet. Some are on land, while others are far out at sea in offshore fields.

The largest oil fields are the Ghawar Field in Saudi Arabia and the Burgan Field in Kuwait. These huge places hold between 66 and 104 billion barrels of oil. For natural gas, the largest field is the South Pars/Asalouyeh field shared by Iran and Qatar. In Russia, the Urengoy and Yamburg fields are also very large. In 2008, a test well in the Gulf of Mexico reached a depth of over 32,000 feet.

Working at an oil field is a massive task that involves many different steps. The industry is divided into three main parts called sectors. The upstream sector focuses on producing the crude oil from the wells. The midstream sector handles the transport of the oil through pipelines or tankers. Finally, the downstream sector refines the oil into the products we use.

Building these sites requires roads, housing for workers, and large machines. This work can last for many years to keep the energy flowing to our homes.
