Oil platform

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An oil platform is a huge structure used to get fuel from the Earth. These platforms help people extract petroleum and natural gas. These fuels hide in rock layers deep beneath the seabed.

Most platforms work on the continental shelf. This is the area of the ocean floor near land. Some platforms even work in lakes or inland seas. They are very important for providing energy to the world.

There are many ways these structures work. Some platforms are fixed to the ocean floor. They use steel legs or concrete parts to stay still. These are built for very long-term use.

Other platforms are designed to float. A tension-leg platform, or TLP, floats but is tied to the seabed. It uses tight ropes to stop moving up and down. Some platforms are even called drillships because they are ships that can drill.

Even remote wells under the sea can connect to a platform using flow lines.

People have been drilling for oil for a long time. A Polish man named Jan Józef Ignacy Łukasiewicz built the first modern oil refinery in 1856. In 1891, the first submerged oil wells were drilled in Ohio. These wells were built in the fresh waters of Grand Lake St. Marys. Later, in 1896, people drilled in salt water in California. These wells used piers that stretched from the land into the channel.

This shows how drilling moved from land into the water.

Many famous discoveries happened at specific times and places. In 1923, the Bibi Eibat well began working in Azerbaijan. In 1937, a fixed platform was used near Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. A major moment happened in October 1947. The Kerr-McGee company completed a well that was out of sight of land.

This was a historic first for offshore drilling. Since then, the technology has grown to reach much deeper waters.

Today, we can find platforms in many different oceans. Huge fields exist in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. There are also major areas in the Caspian Sea and off the coast of Brazil.

Some platforms work in very deep water. The Perdido platform floats in 2,438 meters of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Another platform, the Petrobras America Cascade, works even deeper at 2,600 meters. These machines help us reach energy that was once impossible to find.
