Oil well

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An oil well is a deep hole bored into the Earth. Its main job is to bring petroleum oil to the surface.

Often, natural gas also comes out of the hole along with the oil. Some wells are built to produce only gas.

Creating these wells is a very expensive task. It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to make one. Drilling in the ocean is even more costly.

Companies sometimes sell wells to each other. This happens because the value of a well changes as oil prices go up or down.

Making a well starts with a careful plan. Engineers and scientists pick a target deep underground. They must design a path, or trajectory, from the surface to that target.

A drilling rig then begins the work. It uses a drill bit to cut through the rock.

To keep things safe, workers pump a liquid called drilling mud down the pipe. This mud cools the bit and carries rock pieces back to the top.

Workers also add steel pipes called casing to keep the hole strong. They pump cement around these pipes to hold them in place.

People have been looking for oil for a very long time. The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in 347 CE. These ancient wells used bamboo poles to reach the oil. In the 9th century, a Persian chemist named Muhammad ibn Zakarīya Rāzi distilled oil to make kerosene.

Later, in 1854, a Polish pharmacist named Ignacy Łukasiewicz drilled one of the first modern wells in Bóbrka. In North America, the first commercial well started in Ontario in 1858. By 1896, people were even drilling offshore in California.

Modern technology has changed how we reach deep oil. In the past, most wells were just straight vertical holes. Now, we use directional drilling to make wells that curve.

These wells can even become horizontal to reach more oil. This helps us reach oil that is far away or under difficult spots. One famous deep hole is the Kola Borehole. It used a mud motor to reach a depth of over 12,000 meters.

Some wells even use hydraulic fracturing to help more oil flow out.

We must be careful with old wells. If a well is not maintained, it can become an abandoned or orphaned well. These wells can leak harmful substances into the air, water, or soil.

A 2020 estimate suggested there are at least 29 million abandoned wells around the world. These can release gases that contribute to climate change. When a well is working well, a pumpjack helps pull the oil up.
