Fracking

Fracking is a way to help oil and gas flow from deep underground.

Scientists and workers call this well stimulation. It is used when rocks have low permeability. Permeability is a word for how easily liquids can move through a material. If rocks have low permeability, the oil and gas are stuck. Fracking creates new paths so these fuels can move more freely. This process turns the source rock into a reservoir.

The way it works involves a high-pressure liquid.

Workers pump fracking fluid into a deep wellbore. This fluid is mostly water mixed with thickening agents. It also contains small grains called proppants. These proppants are usually sand or aluminium oxide. The high pressure creates cracks in the deep bedrock. When the pressure is removed, the proppants stay in the cracks. They hold the fractures open so gas and oil can flow out.

People have tried different ways to stimulate wells for a long time. In 1865, Col. Edward A. L. Roberts patented an "exploding torpedo." This used nitroglycerin to help get oil from the ground. Later, in the 1930s, workers began using acid to etch cracks in rock. The first hydraulic fracking experiment happened in 1947. It took place at the Hugoton gas field in Kansas. This test used gelled gasoline and sand from the Arkansas River. The first successful commercial jobs happened in 1949 in Oklahoma and Texas.

Fracking has changed how much energy the world can use. By 2012, there were 2.5 million frac jobs done around the world. Over one million of those jobs were in the United States. This helped the U.S. become a major oil exporter by 2019. However, this process can lead to the leakage of methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Some people also worry about the cost to the environment. They mention risks like noise, air pollution, and even earthquakes.

Understanding fracking helps us see how we get the energy we use every day. It is a very controversial topic for many reasons. Some people like it because it can lower energy prices for families. They also think it helps replace coal with cleaner natural gas. Other people are worried about the safety of groundwater and surface water. They worry about how it might affect public health. Because of these different views, many countries have strict rules. Some even ban the practice entirely.
