Directional drilling

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Directional drilling is a special way to make holes that do not go straight down. Most wells go vertically, but these bores can turn at an angle. This method is very useful for reaching things deep underground.

For example, it can reach oil under a town or a lake. It can also reach oil under ground that is hard to drill through. This helps keep the surface of the land safer and cleaner.

To steer the drill, workers must take a survey. A survey is a set of measurements that shows the path. It tracks the depth of the hole along its course. It also measures the inclination, which is how much the hole tilts. Finally, it measures the azimuth, which is the direction of the hole.

Workers use tools to send this data back to the surface. This helps them make sure the drill follows the planned blue path. They can make small changes to the rotation speed to stay on track.

People learned that wells did not always need to be vertical. This idea grew in the late 1920s during some legal cases. In 1934, H. John Eastman and Roman W. Hines helped save a field in Texas. They worked with George Failing from Oklahoma to help. Failing had made a portable drilling truck in 1931. This allowed people to drill many slanted wells very quickly. This work helped stop a large fire in the Conroe oil field.

New tools have made this work much faster and easier. In the 1970s, mud motors became very common. These motors use the power of drilling mud to turn the bit. This lets the drill pipe stay still while the bit keeps spinning.

There are also rotary steerable systems, or RSS. These tools let workers steer the drill even while the pipe is rotating. This makes it possible to reach spots that were once impossible to touch.

Directional drilling connects to many things we see every day. It can be used to install new utilities under our streets. It can also be used to reach coal bed methane. Some wells can even be used as relief wells. A relief well can go into a troubled well to stop a blowout. This is done by pumping heavy fluid to stop the pressure. This keeps the area around the well much safer for everyone.
