Stratigraphic section

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Earth holds many layers of rock. We call this a stratigraphic section. These layers show the order they were made. Each layer was laid down one after another. This helps us see the history of our world. It is like reading a book of Earth's past.

Layers form in a very steady way. It starts with sediment, which is loose material. Gravity pulls this sediment down to the bottom. This creates a rule called original horizontality. This rule says layers start out flat. They lie horizontal under the pull of gravity. This makes the layers stack up neatly.

Many scientists study these rock layers. Biostratigraphers look for faunal assemblages. These are groups of animal remains in the rocks. They use these to guess the age of a section. Geochronologists work to find exact dates for the rocks. They want to know the timing of deposition. This means they study how fast layers form.

Other experts use different tools to learn more. Magnetic stratigraphers look at igneous rock units. They search for signs of magnetic reversals in drill cores. Some scientists perform stable-isotope studies on the rocks. This gives them facts about the past climate. These studies help us understand how Earth changed. Each method tells a different part of the story.

These sections are very useful for people today. We use them to find water in the ground. They also help us find coal. We can find petroleum and natural gas there too. Scientists also use a special spot called a GSSP. This stands for Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point. It is an agreed point used to define time scales.
