Rocks often sit in many layers. We call this a stratigraphic section.

These layers form in a special way. They start as sediment. Gravity pulls the sediment down. This makes the layers lie flat. This is called original horizontality.

Scientists study these layers to learn about Earth. Some look for fossils. They study faunal assemblages. These are groups of animal remains in the rocks. These groups help them guess the age of the rock.

Other experts use different ways to find dates. Geochronologists find the exact age of the rocks. Magnetic stratigraphers look for magnetic reversals. These are changes in the rock's magnetism. Some scientists study isotopes. These are small parts of atoms. They help us learn about the past climate.

We can also find useful things in these layers. People look for water in them. They also look for coal. They find petroleum and natural gas.

There are even special spots called a GSSP. This is a global reference point. It helps define the time scale for the whole world.
