He was born in 1831 in a place called the Russian Empire. Later, he moved to the United States to find new things. He lived in many places like New York and San Francisco. He even traveled to Canada to look for gold. These travels helped him learn many different skills.

Davis had a clever way to make clothing much stronger. He worked with heavy fabrics like denim and cotton duck cloth.

To fix weak spots, he used small metal bits called copper rivets. He placed these rivets on the seams and the corners of pockets. This kept the fabric from ripping during hard work. The rivets acted like tiny anchors for the cloth. This simple idea made the pants last a long time.

His big idea started in a small town called Reno, Nevada. In 1869, Davis opened a tailor shop on the main street. He made many items for workers on the railroad. He made tents, wagon covers, and even blankets for horses. A woman once asked him to make strong pants for her husband. Her husband worked as a woodcutter and needed tough clothes. These pants were a huge success among many laborers.

Because the pants were so popular, Davis needed help to protect his idea. He went to Levi Strauss in 1872 for financial backing. They wanted to file for a patent, which is a legal paper for an invention. On May 20, 1873, they received US Patent No. 139,121. This patent was for "improvements in fastening pocket openings." That same year, he added a special orange stitched design to the back pockets. This helped people know his pants were the real deal.

Today, many people still wear the kind of pants Davis helped create. The special orange stitching is still a famous trademark. Davis moved back to San Francisco to run a large manufacturing plant. He managed the making of work pants, shirts, and overalls. He stayed at this job for the rest of his life. Davis died in San Francisco in 1908. His hard work changed the world of clothing forever.
