He started a brand that people still know today. He was a malletier, which is a maker of trunks and leather goods. His work helped change how people traveled with their things. Today, his company is part of a large group called LVMH. His story shows how a person can build something great from nothing.

Louis changed how trunks were made for travelers.

Before him, most trunks had rounded tops. In 1858, he introduced flat, rectangular canvas trunks. These were much easier to stack on top of each other. He also made the world's first pick-proof lock. This lock kept a traveler's items very safe. He even kept lock patterns at his workshop in case a key was lost.

Louis had a very long and busy life.

He was born in 1821 in Lavans-sur-Valouse. When he was 13, he walked 292 miles to Paris. He arrived in the city in 1837. He learned his craft by working for a maker named Monsieur Marechal. In 1854, he married a woman named Clemence-Emilie Parriaux. He opened his own shop shortly after they married.

His business grew very large over many years.

In 1859, he opened a workshop in Asnières-sur-Seine. He used a special canvas pattern called Damier. In 1872, he created a new beige monogram design. This design had a red stripe that became very famous. Even when the Franco-Prussian War caused trouble in 1871, he rebuilt. He opened a new shop at 1 Rue Scribe in Paris.

Louis worked for very important people in France.

He was the personal trunk maker for Empress Eugénie. She was the wife of Napoleon III. Her job was to have her beautiful clothes packed in an exquisite way. This work helped him meet many other royal clients. Louis died in 1892 from a brain cancer called glioblastoma. Now, you can visit the Louis Vuitton Museum in Asnières to see his history.
